Right next to the Dubai Miracle Garden lies the Butterfly Garden, the first butterfly garden in the Middle East. Due to the warm climate of Dubai, the Miracle Garden cannot be open all year round. Therefore, Dubai sought to create an attraction that visitors could enjoy throughout the year. The result is the Butterfly Garden, a stunning indoor garden filled with tropical plants, flowers, and butterflies.

The Butterfly Garden consists of nine domes where over 15,000 butterflies from around the world freely flutter about. In total, there are 32 different species of butterflies in the gardens, including the beautiful owl butterfly. This butterfly is the largest species flying around the gardens. A fascinating detail about the butterfly garden in Dubai is that all the butterflies fluttering around the gardens arrived in Dubai as caterpillars and transformed into butterflies within the gardens.

The Butterfly Gardens in Dubai

Before entering the main garden, you walk through a gallery filled with artworks inspired by butterflies. The highlight of the gallery is a massive collage of Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Crown Prince of Dubai, made from hundreds of colorful butterflies. After the gallery, you pass through special “curtains” to prevent the butterflies from flying out, and you enter the gardens. What’s remarkable about the butterfly garden in Dubai is that visitors are allowed to touch the butterflies. However, there is staff present to give instructions to ensure that the butterflies are not harmed when touched. You can’t simply grab butterflies out of the air; you need to extend your hand, and they will naturally come to rest on it.

Each dome has its own climate tailored to the butterflies flying around in the garden, but they all have one thing in common: each dome is filled with countless flowers, green plants, fruit bowls, and nectar, along with many fluttering butterflies. Thanks to the numerous windows in the domes, plenty of natural light enters, but the downside is that the temperature can quickly rise during the hot summer months. Since butterflies thrive best in temperatures between 24 and 28 degrees Celsius, the domes are equipped with air conditioning to maintain a constant temperature of 24 degrees Celsius. This is ideal for the butterflies, plants, and certainly for the visitors!
